CALPIRG has officially endorsed three of the statewide ballot measures: Prop 54 to increase legislative transparency, Prop 59 to Overturn Citizens United, and Prop 67 to Protect the Statewide Plastic Bag Ban. 

Today I stood on the steps of San Francisco City Hall with Treasurer Jose Cisneros and Supervisors John Avalos and David Campos to support the introduction of a resolution ending any formal financial ties the city has with the hometown banking giant Wells Fargo. Here are the remarks I gave at the event.  

Earlier this week the Secretary of State announced a groundbreaking new partnership with Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and all three public systems of higher education to encourage eligible students to register and vote. CALPIRG Education Fund's New Voters Project is proud to have played a supporting role in the project.

Today, CALPIRG joined NRDC in a petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, challenging the agency to do what the law requires of it — protect the health of Americans from the misuse of antibiotics. 

On August 31st the California state legislature wrapped up its work for the year, sending hundreds of new bills to Governor Brown’s desk - including bills to reduce harmful global warming pollution protect consumers from surprise medical bills, protect homeowners at risk of foreclosure, restore campaign finance options to reduce the influence of big money in politics, and give voters more options for casting their ballot. 

On Friday the Appropriations Committee in both houses will be meeting to vote on pending legislation that affects state government finances. Here's a list of public interest bills to watch, all supported by CALPIRG.

Yesterday I testfied before a legislative committee hearing on the VW emissions scandal. From my testimony: "If a company produces a product that is defective, it should buy it back. If a company lies about what is in its product, it should buy it back. If a company tricks its customers into unwittingly polluting our air, it should make up for that pollution. It has been more than five months since the scandal broke and VW still hasn’t made any of these commitments to the customers it lied to."
