With salons closed in recent months as part of sheltering-in-place efforts, I’ve found myself doing more self-care at home -- from pedicures to Zoom make-overs with friends. Digging through my bathroom cabinet to find supplies, an important question dawned on me: Can I be sure the makeover products are safe?

Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act Fails to Pass Out of Assembly Health Committee

“Today the Assembly missed a huge opportunity to protect public health by banning known toxic chemicals from our beauty and personal care products. 

Known toxic chemicals like mercury and formaldehyde have no place in products we put on our face or rub into our skin on a daily basis. 

We know that exposure to lead can affect how our children learn, think and behave. Yet every day, California kids go to schools where the drinking water is contaminated by lead.

California Fragrance Disclosure Bill Held

 

In a major setback for public safety and transparency, the California Assembly Appropriations committee held back SB574. the Cosmetic Fragrance and Flavor Ingredient Right to Know Act of 2019 by Senator Connie Leyva. Without this vote, the bill may not make it out of the legislature in 2019, and the public won't be able to find out what toxic ingredients are hidden in the fragrance of lotions, lipstick and other products we use on our bodies every day.

FDA FINDS ASBESTOS IN CLAIRE’S MAKEUP SOLD TO CHILDREN, CONFIRMING CALPIRG TEST RESULTS

Nearly a year after a CALPIRG study showed that U.S.-based retailer Claire’s has been selling makeup contaminated with carcinogenic asbestos, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed our test results. Both CALPIRG and the FDA found asbestos contamination in some of Claire’s makeup products marketed to children.
