Today, CALPIRG joined NRDC in a petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, challenging the agency to do what the law requires of it — protect the health of Americans from the misuse of antibiotics. 

Delivered Right to KFC's Doorstep

Over the past few days our staff and volunteers went to KFC restaurants in San Diego, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and the San Francisco Bay Area and delivered a petition with over 9,000 signatures from concerned Californians, calling on the Colonel of fried chicken to stop serving meat raised with antibiotic overuse. 

Yesterday was National Fried Chicken Day. At CALPIRG, we decided to celebrate by calling on the largest national fried chicken chain to help stop the misuse of antibiotics on factory farms.

Over 50 Groups Call on Restaurant Chain to Change Beef Sourcing Policies

As a significant purchaser of meat, we believe that In-N-Out has a major opportunity and responsibility to address this growing public health threat. Our groups call on In-N-Out to make commitments on antibiotic stewardship.

Yesterday Subway announced their plan to serve only antibiotic-free meat. Subway announced that they will completely phase out all antibiotic meat by 2025, with antibiotic free chicken made available by March 2016 and turkey by December 2016. This is a significant victory for public health.

California Enacts Strictest Animal Antibiotic Law in the U.S.

But consumer demand is driving more companies to kick the antibiotic habit. "I think we’re seeing the marketplace change, and this legislation will continue to push it in that direction," said Jason Pfeifle, public health advocate at the California Public Interest Research Group, a consumer group that supports the new law.

Capital Public Radio: Bill Seeks To Combat Antibiotic Resistance Through Livestock

The bill would limit the use of antibiotics in livestock. Beginning in 2018 a veterinarian would have to approve the medication. Over-the-counter sales would also be eliminated.
