Citizen Agenda: An Update For Members Of CALPIRG
CALPIRG.ORG HOW YOU CAN HELP MEMBERSHIP

Steve Blackledge, Senior Policy Analyst

Dear CALPIRG member,

The underlying principle of health insurance is that we all pool together and pitch in each month with the knowledge that no matter how healthy we are right now, we could get sick one day.

That’s why it appalls me when insurance companies charge unaffordable rates, especially to people with existing health conditions or with a family history of illness.

Worse, they often outright refuse to cover people. We’ve been adamant that health care reform must allow consumers to get a fair shake in the insurance market.

The good news is that we recently increased our capacity to stand up to powerful interests like the health insurance companies. This fall we brought on a new Health Care Advocate and Staff Attorney, Mike Russo, who comes to us most recently from Columbia Law School. And we promoted Pedro Morillas, who has overseen CALPIRG citizen outreach offices for two years, to be our new Legislative Advocate in Sacramento.

They have been valuable additions to our team, and we couldn’t have expanded our staff without your support. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Steve Blackledge
