Reduce Our Oil Dependence

What's New

On May 24th and 25th, the California Air Resources Board held hearings to discuss the status of California’s Zero Emission Vehicle program. California’s landmark program, which has been copied in more than 10 other states, requires car manufacturers to offer clean, low-emission vehicles to consumers. CALPIRG urged the Board to reject calls by the auto industry to weaken the program.

How You Can Help

Support Reducing Our Oil Dependence
America has the know-how to move us away from our dependence on oil and toward a cleaner, more secure future by making vehicles that go farther on a gallon of gas. We are asking citizens to join us in calling on Congress to improve gas mileage standards for cars, trucks, and SUVs.

Overview

We can reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Plug-in hybrid cars that go 100 miles on a gallon of gas already exist. In 2007, CALPIRG played a key role in passing H.R. 6, which would eliminate tax breaks for Big Oil and shift resources to energy conservation and renewable energy. But that’s only the first step. Congress should tell the auto industry to make vehicles that get at least 40 miles per gallon.

In California, the Air Resources Board should protect and expand California’s Zero Emissions Vehicle Program, which requires car manufacturers to provide an increasing percentage of vehicles that pollute less by burning less oil. We should also provide incentives for consumers to purchase and use cars that burn less oil. CALPIRG supports AB 493 (Ruskin), which will incentivize the purchase of vehicles that burn less oil, disincentivize the vehicles that burn the most oil, and encourage manufacturers to offer more efficient vehicle options to consumers. On March 27th, AB 493 passed out of the Assembly Transportation Committee.
CALPIRG also supports policies to save energy, increase efficiency, and increase clean, renewable energy like wind and solar power.

Highlight

Clean Energy On Campus

In addition to our work in the state Legislature and Congress, CALPIRG is working at California universities to adopt clean energy policies on campuses and set an example the rest of the state to follow. In 2006 the highlight was CALPIRG’s student chapter at UC Santa Cruz, where the student body voted to pass a CALPIRG-led measure to use 100 percent clean renewable energy sources like wind and solar power throughout the university campus.
