Overview
Protecting the food supply is a serious job. State and local governments are often the first line of defense against threats to the food supply, as they are more nimble and able to respond to consumer concerns. To provide the safest food possible, the federal government must work with state and local governments and allow them to do what it takes to protect public health.
CALPIRG is working to maintain and strengthen food protections by calling on Congress to reject the industry’s attack on food safety laws by:
• Protecting existing food safety laws;
• Allowing states to establish stronger food protections, such as Prop 65 in California, which requires that restaurants and supermarkets warn us about the presence of dangerous chemicals in the foods we eat; and
• Providing consumers the information they need about the food they are eating.
Consumers deserve the strongest possible protections. Congress should reject industry attempts to weaken or eliminate local food protection.
