CALPIRG: Toughen Personal Information Sales (new window)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Lawmakers should make it tougher for companies to buy and sell personal information, the California Public Interest Research Group said Wednesday as part of an effort to prevent identity theft. CalPIRG found that the state's 2003 "Shine The Light" law, which is aimed at protecting consumers' privacy, is difficult to use. Businesses' response to the law was also found to be inconsistent, the group said in a report.

CalPIRG also said some companies are not doing enough to respond to requests for privacy for consumers. The group wants to see new, tougher laws that help consumers protect their personal information.
